World Heart Day will be held on September 27 this year, and to help celebrate the day, and help build awareness of the importance of a healthy heart, Athlone Regional Sports Centre has teamed up with the Advertiser and Precor Fitness to run the inaugural World Heart Day 5k Family Fun Run/Walk.

World silver medal race walker Olive Loughnane teamed up with Boyzone’s Mikey Graham, and RTÉ Prime Time presenter Miriam O’Callaghan to get the nation moving as part of the Irish Heart Foundation’s Heart Week which runs from Monday September 21 to Sunday September 27.

World Heart Day was celebrated in Athlone on Sunday September 27 with a 5k fun run and walk.

The Athlone Regional Sports Centre and Bloomfield Leisure Centre, Mullingar have been named as the only two leisure facilities in Westmeath to receive the White Flag award for 2010.

The team behind the annual triAthlone event are getting behind the flood relief effort in Athlone, with a 5km run being planned for next Sunday December 20.
